Hi,

My Pleco has taken to attacking our angel fish, we have sadly lost one but he has now attacked a smaller angel fish.

Because of this the poor angel has lost its anal fin, and a pattern seems to be emerging, once the angels anal fin has gone they are finding it hard to balance when swimming, they always end up upside down.

We have incubated the small angel, but she does not seem to be getting better.

Does anyone have any tips on how to try and get the angel back to top health?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of water changes and some melafix will help if the fish isn't injured too seriously.
It sounds nasty! Sorry about your other fish.

Is the pleco a common pleco? Angels need all of their finnage to maintain proper balance when swimming.

Plecos shouldn't really be kept with Angelfish (lol Hypocritical because I do) because some Plecs like the slime coating that large flat fish has such as Angelfish, Discus and Silver Dollars. But it depends on the Pleco, mine doesn't touch them but obviously yours isn't the same.

If you keep them together your Plec will eventually kill that Angelfish, you will have to remove one of them

Common myth, they don't like the slime coat, they resort the slime coat when they are not getting fed enough. If you target feed a commojn with veggies and wafers, I can put money on it they will never touch the slime coat.

That makes sense Red. A pleco has got to be pretty desperate to attack an adult Angel.

I knew it was related to being fed but hey, I'm open to other peoples opinions on it, makes sense though as Taurus said.

I don't see anywhere information about the tank size?

You're very correct. Discus breeders will tell you that "some" common pleco's develop a taste for the muscus of Discus and other flat sided fish and they regard these fish as a food source. We're read twice in this forum just this week of common pleco's killing both a Discus and an Angel due to sucking the slime coat. The Bristlenose is not known to do this.

Fish will suprise you sometimes on how well they will recover, as long as you are giving her pristine water conditions, and I mean Pristine! and wth abit of melafix and give her time she should recover. It might take several weeks for it to recover but as long as she isn't stressed out (by too much current causing her to disblanace) she should be alright.

And get rid of your main source of your problem, which would be your pleco. Not much point in curing your angel if you put him right back into the same situation that already wounded him and killed another.

Thanks Hobbsy! That's why I asked if it was a common pleco as I have a BN pleco and an Angel in the same tank. The BN goes out of his way to stay out of the path of the Angel. Common pleco do get quite large and is a poor choose for a relatively small tank.

I would not advise keeping a common in too small of tank, because in the future they may become "territorial" and attack the other fish if the tank is too small. What size tank is it?

RED, my tank at the moment is 180 litres, but we are having another one built into an L shape, that one will be between 375 and 400 litres.

Do you think we should just get rid of the pleco? or would it be beneficial to separate the tank?

The problem at the moment is i want to keep the angels but my partner wants to keep the pleco. Just a small war going on! lol!

Thanks again!
