So my buddy calls me to help him move a 29g he bought for his sons small turtle. Tells me it has a few goldfish, tetras, and 2 plecos. Says I can have whatever fish I want (2 big goldfish, 2 cherry barbs, and an exodon). I help him out not wanting any of these fish, but when we pulled out the plecos they were a pair of bristlenoses that I wasn't familiar with. Since he was just going to throw them in with the turtle (no heat, crap filtration), I take them off his hands.

They're brown with gold spots all over them. I believe one is male and one is female. One is fatter with bristles all around it's snout, and the other is skinnier with only a few bristles at the tip of it's snout. I know they are a type of ancistrus, but can anyone pinpoint the exact species? They're 3-3.5".

I'd say they are just the common Bristlenose plec - Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus

Thanks!! Looks like it... I've never been too familiar with any ancistrus. Most of the ones I see around here are gray without spots.

Agreed.

I'm sure they thank you for rescuing them, no matter what species they are, though!

Yep, good old common BN, I just took 80 ~2" juvies to the lfs earlier this week. As long as there's something in the tank that will eat fry you shouldn't become overrun too quickly when they start breeding.

Agreed, they are pretty large ones too. Spots may be from stress.
