I went out and got some more API liquid test kits. Found out that my water in the tank, and tap (hot & cold) produces no copper. Good news for my shrimpthumbs2: Well my questions come with the GH and KH. I don't really get the gist of these, because my test strips have always said moderate hardness, so i passed it on as OK.
KH Tap water 35.8ppm, tank-53.7
GH Tap water 71.6, tank-107.4
I need a translator please:11: Does CO2 increase these numbers?

No. Do you have any rocks in the tank not bought at a LFS? It's not really a big deal it seems, as long as you do regular water changes

I sure do! If you can locate a thread with my tank pics in it, then you'll see i have three making an alcove on the right side, are they the culprit? Those numbers are still in the moderate area, correct?

It could be. The rocks may contain calcium and or carbonates that are leeching into the water, but as I said, it's really not a big deal imo. You have about 2-3 degrees kH and 4-5 degrees gH, which is definitely in the middle, though leaning towards the softer side of it.

Ok, thanks Chrona. It's actually about 6 degrees gh.
does any of this have anything to do with me not being able to keep a larger snail alive for more than a month or two?
Good question. I wouldn't think so, but maybe they aren't getting enough calcium? Otherwise they should be fine. When they die do they have any signs of damage to their shells?

Er, my mistake. Mental math failed me lol. Perhaps you don't have enough food for them? 6 gH is plenty of calcium. What's your pH? Acidic water eats away at the shells.
Does the gh only have to do with calcium-like minerals? Hmm, I don't understand those parameters as well as I would like. Time for some research.

gH is general hardness, or a measure of calcium/magnesium content when applied to aquariums.
Very good, and kh is carbonate hardness that refers to pH buffering capacity, right?

Yep. But remember than as long as you have even a little bit of kH, your water is buffered from pH crashes. Additional kH past 1 kH just raises your pH (roughly 1 pH per 1 kH)
Interesting, very interesting. I don't check my gh/kh anymore, used to for the first year or so of keeping tanks, but everything is always solid. I have my routines down to a science now.

You only have to check gH/kH once, and maybe again if you are injecting CO2 :)
The vast majority of water available has enough kH to buffer it.

No damage to their shells, plenty of food for them as the khulie loaches dont nearly eat a whole hikari wafer...ph stays between 7.0 - 7.2. As you know, chrona, the snails dont have a problem reproducing in great quantities (mts)
Could it be that all the little snails and shrimp get the food before the big guys?
The guy I work with suggested I keep an algae tank. By that he means a bowl of aquarium water with rocks and sunlight to grow algae, then put them in the main tank for the snails to eat. good idea?

Pretty cool idea I think. Just make sure you're only putting in the green/easy to remove/treat algae lol. God forbid you introduce clado to your tank.

wouldnt dream of it!:thumb:
Cool, thanks for the info. What is clado, if I may ask stupidly?

there's no such thing as a stupid question.
clado algae. probably the worst algae to have. the only inhabitant that i know that will eat it is an amano shrimp, but only if there's nothing else for the shrimp to eat. another problem. it clings to substrate and other abrasive surfaces like a hawk gripping its prey. it looks very similar to fuzz from a blanket. great stuff. lol
How is such algae introduced to an aquarium? With live plants or such similar introduction?

Most algae spores/remnants are always present when you add anything to the tank from an outside source, just like bacterias/ich, etc. Clado generally shows up as a result of low nitrate, low CO2 coupled with planted tank level lighting (ie not the standard light strips)
Interesting. Hope I don't ever see it, but interesting.

i would keep my eye on that tap copper level too it could change my water comes from a few places you not got RO unit for the water
Are you actually able to speak English so we can understand you? Yikes.

Didn't make sense to me. Novice, sorry if I am being too sensitive this evening. We have had some real...interesting posters at times, just want to make sure we keep quality posters and derail the nonsense before it becomes an issue.
