One of my Crimson parakeets flew away yesterday when I was going to move it to another cage. It was 100% my fault, I didn’t take enough care as I didn't realise their wings had grown back in. I noticed that as it flew ever higher and away over the neighbourhood.

Anyway I considered releasing the other one as well as they are a pair and native to the area. (Plenty of food around) However I decided to wait and see what would happen and sure enough. This morning the female sat on the cage again eating a banana I left for her there. She is now back in the cage whit her boyfriend.

BTW if anyone knows anything about what type of nesting box crimson parakeets want I would be very grateful. Can’t find anything about them. I could guess based on related species but if someone knows it is better.

Crimson parakeets. (not my pics)

Wow that's pretty lucky, good thing they're paired up like that. I bet it was a good feeling to see your bird back and safe. They probably just had a fight over him being lazy and watching too much tv, but she came running back when she saw the lovely valentine's banana he brought her. Happens in nature all the time :hmm3grin2orange: .

Are your pair "Rosella Crimson Parakeets"? Or Crimson Wing Parakeets?

My Google-Fu is mighty, but there appears to be more vague of a name than initially thought.

Edited to add: I backtracked using the domain on the pics ... I am on a new hunt :D

Allrighty. So the pics you posted are labeled on the Naturfoto site as Aratinga finschi.

Aratinga finschi is the Finsch's Conure. This species can also be confused with the Red (Crimson) Fronted Conure, Aratinga frontata

Isolate the Finsch's Conure pair you would like to breed and offer them a ten inch by ten inch by 20 inch nesting box with a two and a half inch entrance hole.

Yes they are Aratinga finschi, allthough around here they only go by crimson parakeet, Crimson-fronted Parakeet (never conure) or Perico finche. Thanks for the info. they seem to like the same nesting boxes as white fronted amazons based on your info. To late to breed them this season but I want to be ready for the next.

Hooray!

Glad the info helped thumbs2:

I must have been one of those 20's gumshoe detectives in an earlier life. I love hunting for information. Even before the internet, I would spend hours in the library and the card catalogue was attached to my hip :shappy:

You are sooooo lucky. It's a good thing you kept the mate because that female returned because of that. Altho I suppose the food is pretty good there, too. :)

PS.....How about trying a wicker basket.

ive never had luck with nest boxes, the birds i have kept, parakeets and cockatiels, which one of them is talking like a maniac near me right now-if i hear "pretty bird" again i'll go crazy! but anyway my guys every time i give a pair a box when their "In the mood" they take it apart and build their own from the pieces of twig and wood.

LOL I belive it is more the food than the mate. My amazon flock is more or less free to do as they please, the cage is open during the day and they always return to the cage even if they do go to explore other parts of the garden as well.
