Hi, I'm Ed and I live in the UK.

I'm returning to aquarium keeping after a while. At the moment I have a 50 litre tank undergoing a fishless cycle and haven't yet decided what to put in it.

I've kept fish for quite a while, at first with my dad in South Africa when I was a kid. He built ~ 250 litre tank but not all our choices were good - I remember we got some kind of ciclid as a small fish that grew too big very quickly and got aggressive to the other fish so had to be sold. That was before the days of the internet so advice was harder to get.

Thanks for all the replies. None of my fishkeeping books had anything about fishless cycling so I never tried it before. I'm surprised no-one thought of it before as it seems much easier and kinder on the fish than exposing them to the ammonia and nitrites.

I studied biology at uni, so I knew a bit about the nitogen cycle already.
