that blue behind him is actually the neon tetra school

I have a gold and a blue three-spot. They are beautiful fish and the only thing I have against them is their aggression. Just wanted to share this little picture I took.

How old is he? Seems to still have some of the juvenile mis-shapen-ness. Not to mention he still has his second spot, something the gold variant is supposed to be lacking.

Otherwise, though, cute fish.

I want to say they aren't that old. They are just about 3 inches long right now

Fair enough. Still fairly young. He should round out some as he gets older. =)

Here's a pic of my current Gold female at about a year old. When I first got her she looked just like yours. :hmm3grin2orange:
Quite a difference in shape and proportion, no?

What's wrong with his nose? Looks like he has something there.

I had the 3-spot blues. Your's appears to just be a color variant of that species. Mine held onto all their spots, as well.

If you're talking about the bump, just looks like a Gourami with puckered lips to me.
If you're talking about the black fleck, just looks like a random bit of coloring. Kiwi has several. The gold variant isn't exactly the most uniform fish.

Of course I could be wrong, though!

If your gouramis are aggressive, it is because you either have two males, or a male and a female (I can tell from your picture this is a male-- BTW, very nice fish!). I actually have 6 females in my 90 gallon and they are quite peaceful. If you want to cool down the aggressive behavior, get a couple more females, if space allows. Or you could trade in your male for a female, but I would totally understand if you didn't want to. I get very attached to my fish!

Females can be just as territorial and aggressive as males.

Example: My current Gold was in a school once. Her aggressiveness was still high. She attacked three of her tankmates before she was given to me. When I got her, she killed a further seven fish before I isolated her.

Three-spots are simply unpredictable. Saying that the aggressiveness is because of something specific doesn't work, as the 3-Spot Gourami personalities simply vary incredibly from fish to fish. If you've managed to get a peaceful school going, congratulations, but it doesn't mean it will always work.

Apologies if I sound rude, but just stating a fact about how unpredictable this particular species is!

I'm sorry your gourami was so aggressive. I always do extensive research on any fish before I purchase, and multiple books and web sites have said that females will be peaceful together, and a male with 3+ females will be peaceful too. I guess I am also going from experience, since my fish are also very peaceful together.

Fair enough.

Was just making sure both sides of the possible stories were laid out.

That's like female bettas. There are some people who can have an entire tank full of happy females, there are others who can't so much as let them look at each other.

I figured it was a male because of the aggression. How can you tell though? I want to be able to try to sex them if I trade it in for a more peaceful female.

Pointed dorsal fin. Your gold is definitely male.
