View Full Version : Just a random question... about monster tanks.

So as I was going to sleep last night I was "day" dreaming about a "relaxation" room... Basically have a huge built in the wall (on the ground!) Central American Cichlid tank, or some other... and a couple others like a long rainbow fish tank... things like that. With a couch and light, and painted dark with no windows.... It would be strictly for viewing the tanks. :) Anyway so that was my daydream. :11:
My question came up... How do you filter those large tanks? Do you have to use a pool filter? I'm thinking this tank would be like 500G. What is involved with filtering a tank of this size?

Wet/dry, pool filter, maybe a big@$$ canister filter...:hmm3grin2orange: I wouldn't be too surprised to see something like a sump on there either.

Shame people buy these for their tanks... nice to have one in a well filtered clean pond to watch.

Just down the street from me I have the Aquarium Outlet and they have several LARGE setups including a massive shark tank.
They have several solutions but use a modified pool filter system for the freshwater display tanks.
Whoa!! thumbs2:

Multiple large canister filters and/or a very large sump. Im paranoid about a sump leaking so Id get 4-5 Eheim 2260s on the job as well as some hidden powerhead quick filters to prevent dead spots.

Psht, Rue, if you have enough money for those monsters, and a custom "relaxation room" with built-in tanks and special filters, I'm sure you can afford to hire someone to come clean your tanks once a week.

Psht. We find twins, I am definitely stealing them! One can be my chef, the other will clean my tanks. In a speedo.
No, no, no! We find another set of twins to do that!
I'm not wasting a good Scottish kilt-wearing Chef on the tank...
For that? I'm thinking Spanish...

Agree
Eheim 2262's would be even better,or some Fluval FX5's would work too.
Sumps are what people usually do on the very large tanks. You can build a sump for a fraction of what you would spend on canisters.
