View Full Version : Iridovirus?

About a week ago, I added two dwarf gouramis and a school of harlequin rasboras to my cycled, planted 20 gallon. A couple of days ago, one of the gouramis started changing colors. It started with a white patch on top of his head, and when I noticed it I started adding Pimafix. However in the past two days the patch has spread to cover the front half of his body in a mottled grey and black. Is this iridovirus? His behavior hasn't changed at all, but I've only had him for a week so I don't really know what is "normal" for him. My other fish don't seem to be affected at all but I'm worried about the other gourami catching it. Should I euthanize this fish or is there a chance that it's something curable?

I did read that before I posted, but other than the discolouration he hasn't shown any of the symptoms mentioned in that post. So, I was hoping people would have some insight as to whether this particular case is iridovirus or something else that's curable.

What flavor of dwarf gourami is he? Honey, red flame, powder blue ... ?

It doesn't sound like an Iridovirus infection to me, however I could of course be wrong as it can start with a vast number of symptoms showing up first. I've personally never seen the same order of symptoms twice.

Are yours Gouramis the same gender? If they're different genders, it could just be a display of breeding colors - but those usually come and go within twelve hours.

When Gouramis change to darker colors they are usually breeding or stressed.

Do you have a water testing kit?
Do you have another tank you could move the possibly sick Gourami to?
Gourami are personality filled fish, with each one having a distinctly different one. It may just be that being around other fish stresses your Gourami. The easy way to find that out is to isolate it. If the colors go back to normal, it was a tankmate issue. If the colors don't, something is truly wrong.

The main thing you can do right now is to try to keep the fish comfortable, and pay attention to any future symptoms that come up.
Keep us informed.

The sick fish is a Flame morph, and both of my gouramis are male. I've checked all the water parameters and they are fine, so I'll try isolating the sick fish like you've suggested and see if it helps. Thanks!

No matter what the case is you'll likely have to keep the possibly sick Gourami alone from now on - to avoid stress if it hates tankmates, and to avoid passing on an Iridovirus infection to your other one if it does indeed have that as well or instead.

Do you have a proper set-up to keep a Dwarf Gourami alone the rest of his life?
