Hello.
I was wondering if anyone knows if plastic welding of two undergravel filter plates together would create toxin in the aquarium. The filter is the white colored, ridged heavier ones. I think the brand is "Perfect Flo" but not possitive about that.

Assuming you do it without useing chemicals, it should be fine. Why do you need to weld it?

Oh yea, and UGF are obsolete as far as todays technology goes.

Well by welding I mean the process of using a soldering gun with a flat blade to cut the ends of each side of the UG filter and then fuse them into one using the soldering gun. I used to work for an aquarium store and we used to do this all the time so was wondering if it might release some toxins which might continue to leach into the water over time at the site of the weld.
I just want to use one large powerhead instead of two. I already have outside filtration and just wanted to add some UG filtration.

I know what plastic welding is.
What size tank and what kind of filtration?

Thank for your input Drummachine.
I didnt mean to undermine your knowledge about the plastic welding process but when you mentioned the use of chemicals I wasnt sure if you knew what I meant.
I know most people dont use UGFs anymore but I have been into aquariums for about 30 years and I still like them. I do have Rena Filstars as well on my tanks but I find the UGFs keep down the floating material kicked up by larger fish. Materials that are too heavy to float enough to be picked but the Filstars but are stirred up by larger fish.
Anyway my question was more the toxicity of the process of plastic welding rather than filtration.
Thank you for your help!!

If you tank is one of the larger ones, the center brace may not allow you to put it in your tank if attached together. They come to fit end to end in the proper sized tanks so I don't understand why attaching them would be necessary.

Hi Lady Hobbs.
I understand all of the ramifications of what I am doing. The only thing I am not sure about is if plastic welding might cause some kind of toxicity in the tank.
Thank you
