I have a question about water parameters that I’m having difficulty finding the answer to. I tested the water in my tank to today and I’m having trouble reading the ammonia test results. It’s either 0 or .25. Those two colors on the test kit look almost the same to me. My question is: if all other levels are good, can you have ammonia in the tank?

About my tank:
55 g that’s been cycled for about 4 months
Weekly water changes around 30%
Fluval 405 filter
79 F water temp
PH is table at 7.2
Nitrate stable at 5
Nitrite has been 0 since the tank was cycled
I have several plants. I forgot what type they are but they do really well in low light tanks
I’m using a Hagen master test kit (liquid test kit)
I know I have over feed a few times the past two weeks trying some different food the fish didn’t like and left in the tank.

The fish are all behaving normal, plant still look healthy.

Just to be safe. I’m going to do a 30% water change tonight

Do the WC and see if it is more readable. Sometimes having some minute traces of ammonia, not fully zero but less than .25 give it that effect. Also be sure your looking at the results in a room with good overhead lighting and try putting a blank piece of white paper behind the test tube. :22:

When in doubt a water change is the best thing to do and test again later!
A magnifying glass helps me out when there is only trace amounts to be shown.
I have one with a fluorescent light around it,its a great tool.thumbs2:

Have you tested the water you add to your tank?

Depending on the source my water company uses, it at times contains chloramines - this will display as ammonia in your test.

I did take some tap water, let it sit overnight and then tested the PH only

I'll check the test
