DIY- Silent Air Pump

Do any of you ever have those pumps whose motors are the most noisyest thing you have ever heard? I know i do, and i cam across this simple easy DIY to fix that problem.




~MATERIALS~
1x (noisy) air pump
1x x amount of air line
1x canning jar with both lids

~TOOLS~
1x nail setter
1x vice grips
1x hammer
1x hacksaw

~STEP 1~
Use the nail setter to make a hole in the lid JUST big enough to fit the air tubing.

~STEP 2~
Use the vice grips to hold the lid and cut a small slit off of the edge for the power cord to go through. I imagine you could use a sturdy pair of scissors, or a pair of tin snips, but wheres the fun in that?

~STEP 3~
You should now be able to fit your pump inside the jar. Pull your cord/airline through their respective cords. The top should look like this

~STEP 4~
You should be able to suspend your pump inside the jar without it touching ANYTHING. It should look like this.

~STEP 5~
Now you need to tape your tubing in place, so the pump wont fall in.

Now plug it in and enjoy the silence!

Oh, its also important that the jar NOT be air tight, or even close, because, if it is, the pump will struggle with the lack of availible air and eventually burn out.

would regular jars work? or are canning jars a must?

Good idea. I ended up putting mine under the cabinet underneath the tank to quiet it down. It would be fine for awhile then suddenly take off like a jet engine.

ive had some EVIL air pumps. so far, the aquatech dual output one from wal-mart has lasted me a few years, and its quiet. else, my other 4 pumps are evil. they make so much noise and rumble so much that they literally move from the vibration and fall off the stand

sa,e with me. I've had air pumps fall off the shelf under the tank and pull the airline out with it. Now i use a bubble wand with suction cups. have longer tubing, and moved it to the carpeted floor which makes it softer.

I went and bought one of those Hydor Airo pumps.. Hid it in my gravel, ran the air inlet line up the outlet tube for my canister and let it go. Clean the little foam filter that comes with it and viola...silence and mass quantaties of aeration. The amount of bubbles is adjustable as well with a twist of the valve on the end of the line.
