Depends on the size of the fish and what else is in the tank. Coconut halves work for some species, little terracotta flowerpots as well.`

Depending on how big your tank is, you could do a small slate structure in the corner. I have one in each of the back corners of my 55 and my severums love them. Heres the pic link.

Lengths of PVC pipe work well too

that too. Get a few straight pieces so that no fish get stuck like hobbs castle of death

Pyramids of plastic pipe are very popular for shrimp tanks.

wijnands.....I think it looks cool having pvc pipe all stacked up and glued together and sure easier than 200 pounds of rock to clean around.

Some pots or broken jars are nice if your aquarium is big enough
But the best places for most fish species to hide in are in my opinion Plants. And lots of them. Unless you have the type of fish that likes to hide in burrows, which are not many species for most beginners
