View Full Version : My First Fish Auction!
Took the almost 12-year old and went to my first fish auction! I gather it was a little sparsely attended...but boy...if you were into cichlids...it was a cichlid heaven!
There was really nothing there this time around that I could buy...but didn't want to leave empty handed either...so I let my son have some fun and he bid on a bag of hJava fern (now I just have to figure out where to put it) and 5 blue Mystery Snails ...
...paid $8 for about $25 worth of fern...and $5 for $25 worth of snails...
...and if I didn't already have my goldies...I could've bought some drop-dead beautiful ones for excellent prices...nice, healthy, good size...

Thats an awesome price on java fern. I was looking on ebay for some last night and you get a 5 leaved plant for $4.99 with free shipping. Good job!

That is great, its a shame we don't have that sort of thing where I live.
The local aquarium society meets once a month...however the auction is open to the public...so a good third of the audience were guests...
I can't think of any reason why your local aquarium club couldn't do the same thing...
...apparently next month it's 'Bring Your Favourite Fish'...just as an aside to the auction...they also get in guest speakers periodically...
I think they're mostly cichlid guys...but at least the one goldfish guy...if I go again I'll have to talk to him (goldies being my favourite and all)...
...there were LOTS of plants...the Java Fern, cabomba, duckweed, several types of val, and a bunch I'm not familiar with...some I've forgotten already...
...and guess what! One of the 'youngsters' overheard me talking about wanting a bristlenose pleco...and he has some growing out...guess what else I'm bringing home this week??? thumbs2:

In our small country town of 12000, there is not even an aquarium club.

So start one up ;)
There's clubs like these everywhere. Last coral swap I saw in CT, people were giving out coral frags worth 50 bucks for like 10, or 5, or free. Same with plants. Notsomuch with fish, lol.

Theres tons here. You dont need memberships or anything. You just walk in and buy whatcha want
A town of 12000 is a bit small...unless you're the mecca for aquarists...
But I'll betcha if you put together a regional club...you'd have enough interest to have some fun and some nice auctions...

You should start your own then. Most clubs here are free/like 10 bucks a year.

Doesn't take much lol. Put up some flyers at the LFS's and call up some friends.

Now I'm all excited about my first fish auction! Next Sunday the Eastern Iowa Aquarium Association is having an auction in Cedar Rapids, so we'll defiantly be checking it out (here's hoping our water chemistry has settled down by then!)
