Hi All,

This as to be one of the most amazing creatures that i have come across while living in Thailand. They are not scared of humans, infact they like to be held. Their big eyes and the small black pupil follow your every movement. When you have one on your hand and you put a finger next to it's head it will rear up and start boxing with yer finger..Amazing...They remind so much of the movie ET.

Evidently after mating, the female eats the male, so I would not like to be reincarnated as a male Prying Mantis..LOL.

Those are my favorite insects. I go out in my backyard for an hour or more just to find and look at them. I have some really good pics of them hatching that I can try and post if you like.

Truly amazing little creatures. We have some of those in my hometown but, we unfortunately don't see them too often.

Although they are one of my favorite insects, I find myself holding back on any attachment because the females kill the males after mating. :ssuprised:

They are my favorite bug! Nice shots!
I use to see them all the time when I lived on a farm.I remember green and brown ,not sure if the color differences were just different sexes or different species.
They are fascinating!thumbs2:

Lots of green and brown ones here also... see them mostly in the fall when they are laying eggs. My bud had 8 nests that we could find in his bushy backyard in oct. Even hatched one of the clutches before. Babies are so tiny, it's no wonder they are never seen.

We even get them here...but they're very small.

We kept one at the office for a while...too bad they're so short-lived...

Wonderful photos. I love mantises. They are really neat insects, and so many different types. I had a flower mantis years ago. And have always wanted a purple orchid mantis.

Great shots! Im also a big mantis fan.

Pretty much everytime two mantises run into eachother one of them will die. The variable is mating more or less :hmm3grin2orange: They kill in the most brutal of ways, deliberate decapitation, which I always thought showed quite a bit of insight and skill for an insect. I realize thats pretty gruesome but bugs gotta eat too!

Agree. Nature is not always 'nice'. I took a series of pics last fall of a Mantis eating a fly. The head was the first thing to go.

Hi All,

Thanks for the great feedback..glad you all enjoyed the pictures....great video of the Cameleon getting to grips with a mantis...and also liked the pic of the mantis eating the fly...regarding the brown and green mantis's we get them here also not sure why there are 2 different colours maybe camouflage has something to do with it...because they have so many enemies such as birds, lizards etc I suppose they must blend in with their habitat to avoid being eaten.

One of your praying mantis pictures needed a caption. I hope it is okay that I did this.

^_^ Mantises are really cool. It's too cold for them here, so I've only ever seen them in bug shows or in pictures
