I recently picked up a new Oscar (10") from a guy who had him living in a 10gal for the last 9 mths. He seemed ok though. I brought him home to live with my jack Dempsey (5") in a 55 long. A bit small but I plan to be moving them into a 125 in awhile. I figured anything would be better for him than that 10. Anyway, I brought him home and put him in and it totally freaked out the jack. I was a little worried about the jack so I figured it'd be worth the shot to try him in my other 55 with my green terror (7") well it kicked the living crap out of the Oscar (almost literly) he was quite beaten and just laying around on the bottom and looking quite ill. I've pulled him out and thrown him in a QT and now it seems he's developed some type of fungus. I used the tank water that he was in which was pristine. He's moving around a bit but is quite beat up and has a fungus like cotton on the major wounds. He seems he's not critically injured and won't die from the wounds but this fungus has me a little worried. I've never dealt with something of this nature before and would like to know how to treat it. Any help would be great.

And yes I won't be putting him back with the terror again.

Old tank water is good but never pristine.Do daily water changes, adding salt will help but not too much.I go with half doses.
You will need some kind of fungus med as soon as possible.

Melafix will heal those wounds and cure any possible fungus, and also prevent any further infections. Do daily waterchanges and just baby him some...some good clean water, meds and a good diet will bring him back to top form in no time.

So to treat with salt is that just ordinary table salt or aquarium salt? I can't make it in to pick up any meds until Friday. Would the salt help in the meantime? What would be the proper dosing for a 10gal. It's just the QT. He doesn't seem to be wanting to move around much anyway.

A ten gal is not a good quarantine for an oscar!
Its no wonder its not moving.I hope you plan on rehoming it soon or getting another tank.
Not table salt but aquarium salt.

didn't think it would be too bad considering the guy I picked him up from had him actually living in a 10Gal for 9 months at this size. I put him in there because it the only extra tank I've got here right now. I'm planning to pick up my 30gal from my parents house some time but they live kinda far away. Once that happens that's the new QT

Ice cream rock salt works as well. Just make sure it is food grade.

Travis, it would be a better idea to make your own thread in either of the two African cichlid forums, you'll get a better and quicker response as generally more about these types of fish than those on this forum.

Good luck!

Putting him right back in with the same fish that nearly killed him will serve no purpose other than accomplishing it's mission this time. I would try to find him a home other than sharing a tank with that Dempsey or that 10 gallon.
