I have ONE platy in a 40-gallon tank of about 20 fish that has dropsy. The water is hard, but it's the same water they've been living in for about a year or so. Does anyone know what might cause it? All of the other fish seem to be fine. And in fact the danios are as active as ever, the tetras are still schooling, and it's just this one platy that's all bloated and looking like a puffer-fish. ;_;
From what I remember, there's no cure, what would you guys do? I've got her quarantined in an acrylic moving box so I could see her better. Should I just put her back in the tank and let her live out the rest of her days (hours) with her comrades?

If it is Dropsy, I would euthanise (especially if at the pine-coning/scales sticking out stage) as it can be a slow and very painful death, to wait for him to die naturally would be prolonging his suffering. You can try feeding antibacterial fish food or tetracycline, but the survival rate with fish with this disease is not good.

Thanks. That's what I was sort of expecting. I'll check on her this morning, and if she's still pine-coned (as in: it isn't just constipation), I'll euthanize.
Who knows what's wrong. I mean, she was about 3 years old, so, maybe it was just her time, right? All of the other fish seem fine.

It appears one of my Zebra Danio has the same symptons - I have been advised the help it on its way as the damage has been done.
Can't understand it - one of the first fish I had when I put the tank together about 9 months ago. All the other fish seem so healthy and I have loads of baby mollies.

He may have been weak or had genetic/internal problems when you bought him 9mths ago and it takes a toll over time, some of these problems get worse as a fish matures....We usually don't know if a fish has internal problems, but many do these days. He may be old, sadly..sometimes these things just happen!
