I had some ghost shrimp but someone plugged in the old heater I was letting cool and they did not make it with both heaters being on. I got some more after that but they did not live very long. I would like to try a different type of shrimp. Any suggestions? The tank temp is around 82.

Amano shrimp are very hardy. Cherry shrimp as well, but the neons will eat the baby shrimp. I would also suggest turning the temp down to about 76 degrees. The water does not have to be that warm unless you are keeping discus or treating a specific illness.

Oh I was under the impression that 82 was the right temp for tropical fish. I got a heater for my Betta. It doesn't have anything to adjust the settings it just keeps the water at 82. Should I get a new heater for him. Whats a good temp for the Betta.

The vast majority of tropical fish do well at 76-78 degrees. 80+ is for discus.

82 is too high for most species. chrona hit it on the head with 76-78

Also, question your heater brands. Most heaters have a thermometer in them and can be adjusted. I don't care if you have 5 heaters in a tank, if all are set at the same temp they should shut off when the water reaches that temp. Adding another heater should not double your temperature.

^ Though it should be noted that having too MUCH heating (more than 5 watts per gallon) will result in temperature swings when the heater kicks on that will stress the fish.

yep. the rule is 5 watts/gallon, so for most tanks...

2.5g- 12 watt heater or a 50 watt turned really low
5g- 25 watts, or a 50 watt turned low
10g- 50 watts
20g- 100 watts
30g- 150 watts
55g- 275 watts
75g-375 watts
100g- 500 watts
150g- 700 watts
200g- 1000 watts

Lots of resources recommend rather warm water for Betta. 78-85 degrees so it's not weird that OP has his at that temp.

However, most shrimps prefer colder water 80 degrees F is just about the top limit for lots of species.

Placement of the heater is also important. I have one that sits in the filter housing which quickly distributes warm water. Always try to put the heater in an area of the tank where there's a lot of current.
