what the best way to euthanize a fish? my gouramis that have been fighting for about 2 weeks now seem to run out of the will to live and i don't blame them. i need to put them out of their misery because i really feel sorry for them and this is the best thing to do. thanks.

Clove oil to sedate them, then vodka to put them out.

I think I saw a thread with club soda and fridge for a suggestion...under the premise that the co2 would put them to sleep through oxygen deprivation? Im not sure tho, so look into it more please!

well i googled it and found what may be the best way. basically you almost freeze some water and then you put the fish in it. it's supposed to be one of the best ways and one of the quickest.
i guess i have some work to do but i'm not sure if i can go through with it. i really want to remain optimistic but i can not dispute what i see actually happening to them. this sux!

Don't feel bad. I had to euthanize my whole fish tank a few days ago. Fishy TB = nono. Think of it this way, it ended their suffering.

I did that, and drank the extra vodka after. That method is great.
I tried the freezer method on my krib when he was REALLY out of it, and 90% dead, and that worked too.

Catch them in a net. put them in a plastic bag and hold just behing their gills then flick them on the head HARD, kills most. If they are big swing them head first into a wall.

The "Willwleigh"-method is the one I use. I catch those poor fellows, and crash them really, really hard against my bathtub wall.
That kills them in an instant. But it can be a bit messy, so nothing for weak nerves.

Small fish (less than 8 inches) = sharp knife and steady hands, cut just ahead of the gills. but make sure to spike through the head to kill off the brain as well.
Larger fish = bash with a club/against a hard surface.
There are varying opinions on whether clove oil/freezing is painless - it is however easier on the fishkeeper. Boiling water is apparently better than freezing if you can't handle the knife/bash.
When your pet is in that kind of trouble you owe them the final care of a quick death. Don't spare your own feelings.
This is the way I see it, if I were to die, how would I want to go?
1) Having my head bashed against a wall or hard object, while effective and immediate, that sounds like it would hurt. So I'll pass that one up.
2) Being put a sleep and not waking up, sounds a bit more pleasent to me.
Although I've never had to kill a fish myself (thank God), I would think that putting the fish in a cup of Club Soda and then freezing it is by far one of the more less guilty ways of doing it. The carbon in the the Club Soda acts as an anesthetic (like when you are going for surgery), wait a couple of hours, then stick the fish in the freezer killing it peacefully and painlessly.

When we run trotlines, and the catfish wont hit live bait, we take our shad, and either hold them behind the gills and flick them, or hold their tail with one hand, and put your other hand holding their gills, or pinching them, and giveing it a good solid yank to seperate their spinal column.

well i can tell you for sure that the almost freezing of a cup of water and putting the fish in it method is not a quick way to it. although it does seem to me that the club soda would cause more stress in the fish if not killing it due to suffacation.

Like I said, I've never had to put down a fish, but from what I've been told and have read, is that the carbon does put's the fish asleep long before any suffocation takes place.

Its carbon dioxiode, not pure carbon, just to clear things up.

Yes, thank you for pointing that out. I was assuming that everyone would know what I meant.

Excess CO2 causes asphixiation - slow death. Happens quite often when people's pressurized CO2 system for a planted tank experiences an end of tank dump.
EDIT: Also, if you think about it, soda produces that burning sensation as CO2 bubbles form on the surfaces on the inside of your mouth. I can't imagine it would feel very good to a fish to have those bubbles forming on its gills, etc.
