I'm seeing this product advertised more and more. There are some great testimonials regarding this product but it's rather expensive. It's supposed to clear up tanks, remove toxins, remove algae and keep the tank sparkling.

However, two packets of this stuff would be about the same as a diatom filter which would do the same thing and you'd have it for a long time so...............what ya think?

It may be good for cleaning up ponds, tho.

Never heard of it. Sounds/looks like it works, but i dunno...

Algaefix is what most people who use an algae killer with a planted tank recommend. Though most people with planted tanks would rather treat the source. In a non planted tank, cutting off light, adding a phosphate sponge, and/or water changes is usually the way to go, since you can eliminate all nutrients in the water without having to worry about plants.

Btw, it sounds like it just removes ammonia/nitrite/nitrates. I would rather just use Seachem Prime if that's all it does because it's cheaper, but meh. In an established tank, ammonia and nitrite shouldn't be a problem, and nitrates are removed via water changes. I think those testimonials come from under-maintained tanks.

The other claims, like breaking down waste faster (doesn't this cause more nutrients in the water?) and increasing the oxygen content I'm skeptical about.

Who knows though, it may work. I'm just the forum skeptic after all ;)

Sounds convincing, but I wouldn't want to disturb the beautiful balance of bacteria i have in my tank:ezpi_wink1: I think that if this stuff attacked my nitrites and ammonia before the bacteria did, some of them might die off. And my plants need all the nitrates they can get right now, bc after adding more co2 (which increased plant growth A LOT) my nitrates only go up to 5 ppm between water changes instead of 10ppm when i only had 1 gallon for c02. The only issue i have is a minor algae problem ,but not on my plants, just on my fake stump and back glass, nothing i cant handle.

I am very weary about adding chemicals to my tank to treat 'problems'. I have scaleless fish and invertebrates I don't want to compromise.

We sold some at work. One person said it didn't work at all. Someone else said as soon as he added it to the tank, his parrot cichlids sank to the bottom and sat on their sides.

Personally, the only things I like to add to the water is a chlorine remover and plant fertilizer.

I don't use anything either Ed. But was curious about this product. Who knows when an algae spike will appear so I wanted to be prepared. LOL

Algone seems to really be geared for greenwater algae. AlgaeFix already does that, and I have only had one or two people say it didn't work. I have used it when turtle tanks were green. Within hours I saw a difference. The next morning you couldn't even tell there was a problem. It is also perfectly safe for planted tanks.

I've tried that in the past, worthless IMO.

OK Thanks. Now I won't get it. I thought of possibly having some around incase of an algae outbreak but that stuff is pricey! Two bottles of that would be the same as getting a Vortex filter!
