Currently, the largest fish in my tank is a powder blue dwarf gourami. Over the two weeks that I've had him, I've noticed an interesting transformation (of sorts) taking place.

When I first purchased him and brought him home, he hid a lot. I expected this, and after a bit he started exploring. At first, I swore he was a she ... his colors, although still steel-powdery blue, were still somewhat pale in comparison to pictures I could find on the internet. His dorsal was kinda rounded/squared off, and his whiskers were short.

Early this week, I took out some decorations and put in more plants. Over the past couple days I've noticed his colors really becoming more vibrant. The red striping is even starting to show up very nicely. And his dorsal has definitely become more pointed.

He is also MUCH more cheeky and bold. While using the net to retrieve a cardinal out of the tank, he stalked and attacked the net handle :shappy: After a water change this morning, I wanted to reposition one of the plants a touch, and he decided my finger was Simply Not Allowed to Be There and "thumped" it. I suppose it was a bite, but I felt no "teeth" ... just felt like someone flicked my finger. Was definitely some power behind it though!

I laughed and called him a cheeky little bugger ... and he turned right around in the tank and stared it me ... as if to say "You talkin to me?"

Definitely a fish with personality.

He's also terribly greedy. I don't want to overfeed him, but don't want to starve him either ... so I guess will take some time to get the amount of food just right.

Sounds like he is doing well in your care. Good work.

Hehe, sounds like your average VERY happy Dwarf Gourami.

When they were alive my two would always flare their fins up and glare at me if I dared come near their territory!
