i need skimmer help

This is my first salt setup so I'm only doing a 10g to start. I'm having a problem setting up my protein skimmer though. I have an Aquarium Systems hang-on cyclone style skimmer connected to a Maxi-Jet 600 [I also tried a RIO 900, but switched back because the Maxi's brand new; same results with both].

I'm using a different style of venturi valve than what comes with the pump. I have it stuck into the bottom of the intake, right at the impeller.

The problem is I'm just getting fizz at the top; like carbonation. Logical reasoning tells me since it's not making it to the collection cup, it's not skimming any impurities ;)

I've tried adjusting the air control valve back n forth. I tried starting from fully open, working my way down, and the opposite.

It seems really close to foaming, it's just not quite there yet. Any help would be much appreciated and I can post some pictures if that would help.

i think just wait a while until the machine fully works or there is more to skim.

ok, I'll just try waiting. I know enough about salt to know it takes patients.
Last night I was messin with it and now it's getting foamy below the cup, it's just not rising up the tube. I was able to get it to overflow into the cup a couple of times briefly, but not sure why it stopped.

A buddy of mine is going to give me some gravel and a few rocks, both covered in bacteria to give me a head start. So that's really cool and I live in San Diego, so I get filtered ocean water from the Scripps Institute... for free thumbs2:
