View Full Version : Too much Filtration

I am thinking of getting a fluval 105 filter for my tank as I don't think that the small internal filter that came with it is powerful enough for my tank.
The 105 is suitable for aquariums up to 100 liters and my aquarium is 65 liters, is this too powerful or about right?

Most filters double thier factory specs, and you should double your filtration, so its good. You can never have too much filtration.

careful, you can never have too much filtration, but you can have too much current!!:1:

Not if its a marine tank *thumb* (whew, nice save)

It's fine. Canister filters in general have lower flow to tank size ratio because of the increased media.

my 20g planted has a fluval 205 and i do absolutely NO work on anything. all the nitrates/ites are close to 0 and ammonia is constantly down. The mix of bottom feeders, plants, and good filtration makes no work.

I'll second that. The only reason for my water changes is to replace trace elements to the water, because my nitrites/ammmo always zero, and nitrites never go above 10ppm even if i miss a water change for a week.

all i really do is add the water that evaporates every 2 weeks.
My other tanks also dont need much work since i replace carbon with lots and lots of ceramic rings.
Thanks to reptileguys help, the severum/knife tank has LOTS of ceramic rings and sponges, no carbon, since some studies prove carbon= HITH, and severums are prone to the disease
One thing tetra screwed up on is their bacteria supplement. It says for tanks do 1 10% water change every 6 months, WHACKO.
My severum tank gets a 20% water change every day, so i can prevent the disease for him
One 10% change every 6 MONTHS? Whacko is the softest term I can think of to describe that instruction. Is that really printed somewhere? Wow.

yep. They need a lesson. Unless you have a 200g extremely heavily planted with 5 angelfish, you need weekly water changes

If you have a planted tank, consistent water changes is even more important, as the plants will quickly strip the water of trace elements. Plus water changes appears to be the cure-all for algae, etc.

I'll admit, when I first started up my planted aquarium, I never did water changes, and I knew little about proper fertilization. once i started to fertilize, that only took care of the algae a little bit. then I started doing water changes. Then I added more co2. Then i started doing larger water changes. Every step reduced algae in my aquarium, and IMO, the increased water changes had the greatest effect on reducing algae in the aquarium.

Pretty much the same experience here, heh, though I'm not gonna be able to do a water change for a while until the whole fish TB thing is figured out.

Looking at the specs on the 105 and 205 I think that the 205 would be better as the 105 is only slightly more powerful than my existing filter. Also the 205 is only £5 more than the 105 from the LFS so I may get that.
Can I ask Cocoa Pleco a question please could you tell the the dimensions for the 205 as I want to know whether it will fit in my cupboard. Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot Cocoa, I moved my shelf up in the tank stand which gives it enough room.
I'll just have to wait until Saturday, my pay check clears on Friday and i'll be working saturday so I can blow the days wages as soon as i'm finished working.
Thats the problem working at a LFS, too much to buy, and not enough pay! Saying that, that is the only problem!!
