What would the difference be between getting tetras initial sticks with normal black sand, replacing the sticks yearly and using fluorite/eco plus substrate?

Algae is not a concern for me, just looking for a substrate to help promote plant growth that is cheaper than buying 20 bags of fluorite.

Anyone use the sticks before?

Many people use regular gravel or sand with ferts tabs put in it for the root feeders. I have it that way in several tanks. It will do fine for most plants.

Can't really tell you what the difference is. But I use root fert tabs. I use sand, and didn't want to shell out a small fortune one plant substrate. They work well for me. I don't use the tetra brand, I am getting mine from aquariumplants.com. Great price and the plants seem to do better with these ones than the seachem brand I was using.

Yes they work, i have also used jobes sticks. I now use laterite, it grows incredible plants. I mix 1/4" of laterite into 1 1/2" of peatmoss, cover it with crinalin and 2" gravel on top. One of my tanks is 4yrs. running now and i neeed to prune monthly.:l19: :goldfish: :fish2: :help:
