You have to prime them if you havent already. Mine make the same sounds if i start them dry. You fill the back of the filter with tank water then start it up. If that doesnt help, you have a prob that i cant help with, asi havent had it before.

Could ahve a piece of gravel stuck in the mag. drive. Check the Impeller chamber. An air lock will do it to, give it a little shake when its trying to start.thumbs2: :22:

Make sure the water level is high enough. If you used the extention and the connection is out of the water, it will just suck air.
If you pull the intake tube out the impeller is below it. The assembly will pop out with just a little force. Clean that off, clean the chamber it was in, reassemble, make sure the impeller assembly and the intake tube are pressed all the way down, and try again.

When I used HOB filters I would keep the water level in the tank just below the return of the filter, that helps keep it a little quieter.

yep, higher water levels will keep the noise down. Is it the running water you are hearing, or the motor?
If it is them motor you may have gotten some damage or its not totally clean and something is grinding, or it may have just gotten some air stuck in it.

yes they are loud.
if you maintain the water level, it will keep the waterfall noise to a minimum, but the impeller housing will continue to make noise.
im glad your filter is working now, but in the future if it breaks again, or you just want to get rid of it, id suggest trashing it and buying an AquaClear HOB.
