I always wash my hands before doing anything with the tank and 90% of the time I have a glove/sleeve on so I don't touch the water. But I realized that every soap in our home either has a scent added or lotion. Would it be wise to go out and get something like ivory soap?

Fragrance etc are not supposed to be good for the fish. If you are wearing gloves then dont worry about it. I generally just rinse my hands off before going in. It is a good idea to avoid fish tank maintenance on the same day you decide to change the oil in you car or some other such task.

General good hygiene practices should be more than enough.

Only requirement is to wash and rinse well. As long as your hands have been rinsed, fish should be fine. I'm not picky about what type of soap I grab.

Gojo is probably off limits however.

I've been using your run of the mill liquid hand soap since I've been keeping the fishies here and I've never had a problem with them. (At least as far as I can tell)

Use as hot of water as you can take.

Well I guess this is good since the wife seems to have an aversion to any soap that is not aromatherapy or full of shea butter. So I just need to rinse well with hot water...done.

It seems to me that a bar of unscented soap is your best bet. It washes off clean without that slimy feeling of residual lather that liquid soap leaves. Im kinda paranoid about that.

I always just rinse my hands off. I am afraid of soap resdiue left on my hands will destroy my bacteria.

I usually just rinse my hands real well and if I have to wash them I use a mild dish soap. If you use gloves I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree 100%

I dont use soap, I use as hot water as I can stand scrub my hands and clean under my fingernails with a small brush, followed by cold water rinse before I do work in my tanks. Maybe im paranoid but soap leaves residue and I dont run carbon so I prefer this method.

Edit: Its a little bit paranoia probably, I also turn the faucet on and off with my elbow and or clean it before washing my hands if im going to work in the tanks.... lol
