Welcome aboard.
The best advice I can give is make sure you have a cycled tank (nitrogen cycle it's called) before ever adding fish. Second would be to read up on every fish you wish to purchase, see how large it gets and what it's compatible with so you won't have cichlids with community fish, a 12" fish in a 10 gallon tank, etc.

welcome.
Best advice is cycle tanks, and do not follow the 1" per gallon rule. There really is no rule except researching the fish and asking others about stocking
