I'm planning on setting up a dwarf cichlid aquarium, but I don't have any prevoius dc experience. I've heard that apistogramma is a good choice since they leave the plants pretty much alone. But is apistogramma suitable for beginners? And if I get apistrogramma, which other dwarf cichlids can I have with them?

Merry Christmans everyone!!! :P

Hi
Personally iwould not recommend apistogramma to a beginner. Id you would like to have plants i would recommend kribs, african butterflycichlid or egyptian mouth brooder instead.

Which fishes that would be best and which fishes you can keep with them depends on the aquarium you are planning to have them in.

It's a 50 gallon tank.

Then i would suggest a pair of eh of the 3 species above. They will show you the differnet basic behaviour types there are in cichlids and because of their differnet behaviour the won't fight to much.

You might want to get some tetras or some other schooling fishes to keep with them to keep your tank from looking empty.

How many tetras?

depends on which species you choice.

Can I first get the other fishes and then later get the tetras when I see how the tank looks and how many fishes I might need?
Or do they all have to be put in the tank at the same time to get along?

You can add the tetras later without any problem.
