this is the first time ive had more than one type of species of fish in my tank and i think im addicted to the diversity...heres my current population in my 20g
7 zebra danios
3 red platties
2 ottos
what options do i have from here?...my default option is a dwarf gourami. any other suggestions? what other kinds of fish do not need a school that i can add only one or two of?
A dwarf would be fine, you could also add some type of dwarf cichlid like a ram.

You can add a couple of guppies if you like. If you like the colors of the glofish they would school up well with your zebra danios. You could also add a molly or two instead of guppies. Since you're pretty new to the hobby (iirc) I would avoid rams until you have a good bit more experience (maybe in 9 months or so of having a stable tank). This is particularly true if you're interested in GBR as they are very sensitive fish.

dwarf gouramis are a nice addition...I beleive thats what Red S meant in the first reply, but as I like them too I didn't mind repeating!

sounds like you have plenty of fish that will keep the top and middle of your tank busy, why not try a bottom dweller or two, a couple catfish maybe?

are dwarf gourami bottom dwellers?
No, they actually tend to stay near the surface. I agree with jay2487, the top of the tank is already quite busy, and I am sure the Gourami wouldn't enjoy being with the Danio's in a tank this size. Why not look into some tetras or Rasboras?

I think a lone redtail shark would be cool or maybe a couple corys. I have a few favorite catfish but in your tank in a few years you might have missing fish:hmm3grin2orange: If you get a red tailed shark try to find a pet store where there sold at a little older age
I would not suggest a red tailed shark for this tank, as in they get around 5" and very mean.

Agree with Red, they really need a 4' tank with a lot of territory to be properly housed.
