Went to a fundraiser used book sale! Love this annual sale...so much fun to browse through old books!

Bought these aquarium books. They're all quite old...and likely out of date on many current practices...but sometimes these old books have great info...and one has the BEST colour plates...I want to frame some!

...if not...still an entertaining read...

I bought the following...and 3 more...for a whole $7.50!!!

Aquarium fishes and plants, 56 plates in colour. Rataj, Zukl, Maly, 1971.
Exotic Aquarium Fishes, Innes, date? 1960s?
Tropical Fish, Ward, 1978
Brackish Aquariums, Gos, 1979
Anabantoids, Gouramis and Related Fishes, Goldstein, 1971

Nice, but dang those ARE old books lol. Do they tell you to use a UGF for everything? ;)

I found an old saltwater aquariums for dummies book at the library. i was bored, so i figured that i would humor myself and check it out to see how archaic it was. It had all of these weird looking filters and stuff that it said to use. I wish i could still find it. It was "interesting".

Good buy, even if outdated, the basics still stay much the same.:thumb:

my dummies book is only a couple years old and they still show tank setting-up pics with UGF's.

The only thing that older books wont have are UV sterilizers, canister/biowheel filters, and fancy lights

Got busy last night, so I didn't have a chance to go through them...

But I have a long weekend all to myself! Woohoo!

Nothing much of interest in the smaller books...but some have great line drawings!

I love good photographs...but I still think nothing beats a good line drawing or coloured illustration for actually showing what something looks like...so much gets lost in photographs...

The book by Dr. William T. Innes (Exotic Aquarium Fishes, 1966) has some info. I haven't come across before that's of interest...

...did you know fish can be stunned or killed by loud claps underwater...another reason not to tap on the glass...if nothing else it scares and stresses them...

The other cool idea is planting the aquarium plants in trays! I'm sorta doing this with my 'rock planters' and my terra cotta plant pots...but never considered a tray....apparently you used to be able to buy them specifically (earthenware...which is terra cotta I think) or can use glass pans...etc. Pans are best for sagittaria and vallisneria...

...more to come!

I went to the used bookstore today and picked up a copy of Complete Encyclopedia of the Saltwater Aquarium by Nick Dakin (2003)...I've done all the beginner reading...and this book is just another beginner book...but it has some GREAT pictures...
