Hey there,

just wanted to get more advice on plants. I brought like a aquarium combo plant from petco. I wanted to know what is needed to keep them thriving, hopefully these are low wattage plants because there were no light on them at petco.

I was hoping I can tie these plants to the nice bogwood I was able to find. I have a 10 gallon let me know if I would need anything extra for the plant now because I have no fish in there yet.

Here some pics.

Now sure what the foreground white/green plant is, but I do not believe it can be tied to driftwood unless it is some cultivar of anubias and it has a rhizome at the base. The other one is a hygro I think, which needs to be rooted. They need to be removed from the pots and the rockwool taken off, then planted in the substrate.

I thought that plants cannot be planted into the type of substrates I have?
Pebbles?

Should I get those grey things that have like iron supplement that you put underneath the substrate?

Two of these look like houseplants I used to have but can't remember the names of them....arrow leafed "something" is the one smaller one with white blotches. The other with long thin leaves and white centers is another. Whether those will survive in a tank, I don't know. You could try the peat cubes you put the plant in and bury it all in the substract. Pretty nice plants tho.

Unfortunately, many stores sell plants that are not listed as tank plants but make nice looking "arrangements" so people buy them thinking they will work.

A planting substrate is ideal, but pea-sized gravel will work provided you add in said supplements. I would recommend 2x Flourish Tabs in the substrate, near the plants.

I am wary of whether or not that foreground plant is truly aquatic. I know Petco sells mondo grass, which is non aquatic and will rot if kept submersed.

Edit: ah Hobbs beat me to it.

Here some more pics after the plants were separated.

Ah shoot, freaking petco man. Well lesson learned, what else do I expect from Petco.

Where can I get these flourish tabs, they sell them at petco? I wanna find something close by so i can get the plants what they need before they start dieing on me.

They may sell them at Petco, but Petco and Petsmart don't usually carry much with respect to planted aquarium supplies. Best bet is a local privately owned fish store.

I just realized I did not see the third plant! lol

In any case, first thing you need to do is turn off the air pump, as it robs the water of CO2. The biowheel you have in that HOB will also do this, but you are better off leaving that in for the fish, for now, or until your plants are growing and healthy.

The arrowhead plant grows wonderful as a house plant. You may want to use it for that. It "might" do OK as a tank plant but I'm not seeing it. Same with the spiked plant with creme stripes. Also a house plant.

They really see us coming sometimes. I've seen palms sold as tank plants... as well as others that wouldn't make it a month. Burns me up.

Our Petco is blatant about mixing house and aquatic plants. You go check out the tererium plants and see all these cool plants. Then you go over to the aquarium plants and see the same cool plants submerged.

Yes, that tall one looks a lot like a plant that I have had growing in my bedroom for many years
