I'm no expert on cichlids as I just started my tank a few months ago, but I think you are SOL as far as shrimp go. They are just walking snacks to cichlids...
A thought if you're really wanting to try something along the invert. line - maybe one of the FW lobsters would be big and mean enough to hold its own in a cichlid tank...keep us posted, I'd like to know myself if a lobster would work...

Can we spell lunch?

Depending on what you have in it, I suspect most would become snack food for cichlids.

But it makes great live food for them!

You could throw in a bunch of ghosties and if there is very heavy cover maybe one or two will survive for more than 5 minutes. Really, most shrimp will be killed rapidly with cichlids.

Sorry but Cichlids+shimp=ummmm, lunch! Depending on your fish crayfish may work, but even they become lunch for a lot of cichlids. Also if your fish don't eat the crayfish, the crayfish my just injure you fish. Your best bet is to get a lot of ghost shrimp and add them after dark, assuming you have a lot of cover for them to hide. Then replace as needed.
