Hey there AC!

Once again i have a quick question, that prob has a simple answer.

Soon i will be upgrading to a much larger tank(saw an nice cheap 75 gal i want the other day)...Anyways i want to keep my 20gal running as a quarantine tank...Im still a noob to fishkeeping, and this will be my first quarantine tank, and i am curious as to if i should keep some cheap inexpensive fish in there to keep the cycle goin? any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Some people keep fish like danios in their QT tanks to keep the cycle going. Another option is to run the filter from the QT tank on your main tank and just switch it back to the QT when necessary.

Another option similar to the above is just to run additional filter media w/in the 75g's filters. When / If you need to quarantine "someone", just pull some of the filter media you have on hand and put it in the filter for the 20g.

As to keeping fish in the 20g QT tank just for the sake of keeping it cycled, if you're like me, that will quickly turn into a 20g "regular" tank with "pet" fish and you may have qualms about using it to QT new or sick fish for fear of making your existing fish sick.

Also, keeping fish in the QT for the sake of keeping it cycled means you've got another tank to feed and keep maintained / cleaned.

Either keep an other filter on your bigger tank and switch it over to your Q tank when needed, or, and I like this option better, when you need your Q tank just switch over some filter media. You shouldn't need much if you a only quarentiening a couple of fish. Then when the fish are in the main tank you can either throw away the media or reuse it. I would personaly use something like filter floss or cut up sponge and just toss it after the Q period.

I empty mine when its not being used because I keep the water a lot more clean.

Thanks for the awsome feed back...

Keeping a few extra fish and maintaining them wouldnt be a prob, im very dedicated on my fish keeping so far.... Jill you are right, pretty sure a few fish will turn into a fully stocked tank all over again lol, that kinda got me thinkin lol. switching media back and forth sounds like the best idea, considering stocking a 75 slowly but surely, and im looking for a small fish, community type enviroment, in a large tank...annageckos thats a great idea, thats prob gonna be the route i use, maybe shove the old foam filter from my aquaclear into my old whisper haha.

thank you for thre advice again AC, yall are great!
