What kind of algae do oto cats eat? I have some nasty brownish algae growing on the sides of my tank

Diatoms (brown algae) is their favourite, the only other algae they mainly eat is the soft green slimy new algae. If you have the hard green spot algae or hair algae, they won't touch it. You still need to supply veggies etc. now and then, depending on how much algae is in the tank as they can devour it very quickly and they can often lose interest in the algae after a while. If the tank is newly established, brown algae is common and will go away by itself after a while. Best not to add Oto's until a tank is fully established...at least 3 months or more, I always think 6 months is better because of the Oto's sensitivity to unstable conditions.
