Just out of curiosity, how high can nitrates theoretically go before the biosystem falls apart? That is, if you were to keep adding ammonia to a fishless cycle tank and not change the water, what would happen? Not that I'm going to try this, but I'm wondering if there is a point that...well, not sure. That something would happen? Dumb curiosity is all!

Theoretically you can let it go too far but when you get to the point that you have zero ammonia and zero nitrites you are cycled, you don't need to go farther than that, you really don't want your nitrates to exceed 30-40 ppm once cycled, at that point you do a partial water change ( 35% or more I would recommend ) and add less ammonia to keep the cycle going until you are ready to add fish.
