View Full Version : Anyone else have a herd of cows come visit today?
Never a dull moment around here!:help:
I look out the window to see a man standing in front of his tracter (loaded with a big round bale) on the road in front of our house yelling...not sure who he was yelling at...but then I see about 30 cows heading into our yard!!! :ssuprised:
I don't WANT 30 cows in our yard! I don't want my horses spooked (Dundee is scared of cows - and if he's spooked, he might spook the others), or my fences broken down (we're short on fence-repair supplies at the moment) or my shelter belts trampled (I've been babying them - to get them to grow - for 14 years)...
I ran outside...called for my sons...and started yelling to find out whose cows they were...the guy on the tractor didn't say a word...OR the guy in the truck...but then I heard a woman yelling back "They're mine! They're mine!"
Well...the herd looped around and down the back of our home yard...then came back up and cut through my front lawn, through the front shelter belt and back into the yard again...then out through the bush along the western fence-line...and then finally back down the road...
Except for one old cow...the four of us chased her around the yard for another 5 minutes before she headed down the road after the others...
My yard is trampled. Who knew 30 cows could do so much trampling in 15 minutes? But I think the damage to the shelter belt is minimal...*whew*
I need a drink...:hmm3grin2orange:
(And no horses were spooked or injured during this unanticipated cattle drive)...
Well had three herds come through and past me today. Mind you I milked them all.
Yes the cows are great at ripping lawns apart. More because of 4 sharp hoves with 450 ish kgs on top.
What really gets me is once the Heifer get loose that is that. They run all over the place acting stupid and dumb. [Like school G's] Male joke.
Great that your hedge made it. That would have been a shame.

At least your milk cows were productive for youthumbs2: ...the neighbour's beef cows were not productive for us...:fish2:
I'm happy they didn't do any real damage...

Not recently, but I have in past winter had to help corral about a half dozen loose cows in our yard. Oh the joys of living in the middle of the country. LOL
Yes they are very productive. About $20,000 a day from the 3 herds.

It's more fun to herd cows on horseback...but I didn't have time to saddle anyone up...
...the woman asked me if we had a pen that she could put the lone cow in...and then come to pick it up later...she looked so surprised when I said we didn't have a spare pen!
I didn't know I was supposed to have a spare pen...all ours have horses in them...or, I can build one...we have portable panels...
However, moving horses or building a pen would take a while...and I wasn't willing to help that much....
Ah yes! The joys of country living! :hmm3grin2orange:

That's a LOT of milk! thumbs2:
28,000 ltr a day. Yup a lot of milk. Only from 985 cows.

You should have led one the butcher shop!lol
That'll pay for your yard and fill the freezer!:19:
Last time I saw a herd of cow get out of hand they were in the middle of the highway stopping traffic at 3 in the morning!
D*mn those party cows! :hmm3grin2orange:
The kids are still laughing at me...I kept yelling "Not through my shelterbelt! Not through my shelterbelt!"...
...as if the cows were going to listen to me...(blush)

OH man!!! I would imagine 30 cows can do A LOT of damage in 15 minutes!!! Those are big animals!!! Most people who only see cows from their car do NOT realize how massive they actually are.
My old riding horse was also pretty scared of cows. The one I have now isn't, though.
There are more cows around our area than people I think, but most of them seem to stay put. Every once in awhile near one farm, there will be some in the road which is not good.
A few years ago on Christmas morning, it was snowing some and we were going to my parents' house. We saw a calf that was just born but had rolled under the electric fence. We went and told the owners so that was a good save for the day :ssmile:

PS what is a shelterbelt?
That's what generally happens around here...a couple get through the electric or barbed wire fence...and just hang around the ditches until someone rounds them up and put them back in their pasture...
This was a rather unusual turn of events...the owners likely should have had a couple of outriders instead of just using the tractor and the truck...

This thread reminded of the COPS program I watched last night when a trailor full of cows spilled over on a LA freeway.
Shelter belts are hedges.
As for cows, some people think they are loverly adorable animals. Not thinking how dangerous they are.
Had some tourists say "Oh what nice adorable animals. Look how gentle they are."
Mean while the bull was kicking dirt and bellowing snorting. If it was not for the ATV and Fence in the way I would not like to think of what would happen.

Oh yes! Cattle can be very dangerous. A guy I worked with was killed by a bull, and we know some people injured by getting between a cow and calf (all on top of 'normal' injuries like getting stepped on).
And yes...a shelterbelt is a hedge...here we have a row of evergreens growing with a row of lilacs behind them...they help catch the snow, and preventing snow-drift buildups...and provide privacy (we're right on the road...)...
Because we have poor, sandy, salinate soils...it's hard to grow anything here...I baby what vegetation we have...
...stupid cows....

That's always so sad...animals are already scared just from being shipped, now even more terrified with the break-down...hurt...:scry:

What got me was the 1500 people sitting in their cars instead of getting out and helping.
That's sad too...no one wants to get their shoes dirty I suppose...:scry:
It is very sad. That happened not to long ago. Stock Truck lost it's load.
Out of 50 cows 1 survived. Rest had to be killed.
As for the cows being loaded they are very freaked out. More because of how some people handle them very ruffly. Cattle prods till they are in the truck pens. More than enough to over load a humans heart with the electrify flowing thought them. At least it is not all truck like that.
As for the cattle, the Heifers generally more stupid skittish and silly than the bulls. The bulls are dangerous, but more inquisitive.
As for injuries had to many to remember. Broken toes. Smashed Crown Jewel. On and on. Something you become use to, and learn to get a step a head of.

If 50 cows showed up in my yard it would probably make the world news. We get all excited aboiut a raccoon.
Well mind you I would be more worried about the cows on long Island. They would be petrified by the traffic. Be more a stampede.
