Do Fish Mimick The Color Of Their Background?

i was wondering ? lets say i have a black background. Will My cichlids become darker ? would the do better with a lighter background ?

They will to a certain extent. I use a dark background and a dark substrate so the colors are as vibrant as possible. There is a huge difference in their coloration between white substrate and black. For the background, a black or blue background will make your tank look bigger and deeper, while showing of the fish the best.
