is a 10gal tank enough for one comet enough? i have kept this one comet on my desk in a very small tank(dont ask about the size, its really small) for more than half year now. It has been healthy as far as i know. However, i just read this article about how comet make large amount of waste and small tank cause its internal organ to out grow its body and burst. Now i want to move it to a bigger tank before it's too late. Is a 10gal tank big enough? Btw, its about 3.5" long.

PS i know some of you might think it's only a comet and not worth the trouble, but it has been half year already. I really want to keep it. :goldfish:

All goldfish really require 20 gallons for one and 10 more per each additional, but you can pull off a 10g with good filtration (filter rated for 20-30 gallons) and regular water changes (50% weekly) with no issues. I've never heard of fish organs growing out and bursting though. The main issue is nitrate poisoning and a growth inhibiting hormone, which is removed by water changes.

Ammonia does not cause loss of fins. Finrot or abusive tankmates do. It's a bacterial infection as a result of stress from the ammonia

Comets can be kept in large tanks just fine. It's koi that really need to be kept in ponds.

lol at the organ exploding answer. Scoliosis in fish is caused by nutrient deficiencies and or chemical poisoning, not by overcrowding.

This is why Yahoo answer sucks, lol.

The problem with this article, is you have to take into effect the credit of the source (its yahoo), and the credetials of the person. Its always good to get more than one opinion.

ok. but it does sound scary.

Also, how much does a 20 gal tank usually cost?

ok. but it does sound scary.

My mom kept 3x 8 inch long comets in a 29g (coldwater) with a 30g rated filter for 9 years with no issues (before she/I knew any better). We ended up selling the tank and the fish, but there were no such exploding organ issues....lol

do you think aquaclear 50 will be a over kill for a 20g tank?(and induce a too large current?)

It may be ok at full blast, but the flow rate is adjustable, so you can turn it down a bit if you want. You still get very good filtration (better than with the 20) because of the Aquaclears refiltration system and the increased bio media.

umm... so my comet is still in the sub gallon tank while i am waiting for my stuff to come. for some reasons, its trying to jump out of the water? i did a 50% water change but its still the same. anyone know why it's doing that?

a 1 gallon is way to small. I think its not liking the tank size, thats why its jumping

well.. i know its too small, but it has to wait until the bigger tank is ready. The fish has been in it for more than 6 months already. i am just wondering why the sudden change.

are your ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels good??:1:

yea... i know the tank is too small. so i change water at least 2-3 times a week. I also tested water with those indicators. the water is fine.
