About 2 years ago I invested in a 24" Coralife compact fluorescent fixture for my planted tank. On the box, it says it is "ideal for freshwater and planted aquariums." I strongly believe that this is only because the fixture came with a 6700K, 65 watt bulb.

I am contemplating setting up a salt water aquarium, and I was hoping that I could save some money by using this fixture. Could I just buy any straight pin compact bulb (such as the True Actinic 03 Blue) and place it in the hood?

I apologise if there is indescepincies with my lighting terminology, I have little experience with lighting and I am just reading off the box.

Yes you can use it. Even the 6500K bulb will be fine, your water will just no look as blue as most marine tanks. There are studies that are ongoing regarding the benefit of the blue spectrum for coral growth, but it is an area that is still unknown. Personally, I find the bluer look of a 10K bulb or higher is more aesthetically pleasing.

Thank you SW Addict, that's great news for my wallet.

I am still in the planning stages for this aquarium. Obviously, since it's a 24" fixture, I will be using my 15 gallon long in storage or buy a 20 high. New questions regarding my plans will be posted within the next few days.

It will work. Maybe a 50/50 bulb?
