The after is much better! I'm a big fan of 'natural' for the most part...

the 5yo was a little disappointed but it does look better
had to tell him we use in the next tank (mts great stuff)
Kids should have as colourful a tank as they like...ultimately the fish don't care...and if the tank is in their room...it's all good...:hmm3grin2orange:

Excellent change. I've never liked the look of blue gravel. The natural colored stuff looks 100 times better IMO. thumbs2:

Great makeover Padams! I love how it looks like a creek bed. Not a fan of blue gravel myself, though it's a kids tank so bright colors are acceptable then.

Thanks all!!! It is actual river substrate from the Tennessee River. Spent Friday fully cleaning with 1g of vinegar and washing for oh 1 hr.
I drilled 1/8th inch holes in the bottom of a 5g bucket, added gravel, and washed by filling bucket and stirred till the level got to low and repeated, and repeated, and repeated.........
Live plants are in the future but on the next tank.
BTW the shrimp are 2x as hard to find now! you think I should dye them?:hmm3grin2orange:
