It wouldn't shut off! It was turned all the way down and stayed on. The fish were in 83F water! I had to run out and buy a replacement. Strangely enough, the fish didn't seem to mind. If anything, they were all more active and hungrier. Do fish actually like the warmer water?

Fish are more active in warmer water. Whether or not they actually like it depends on the fish. Consider yourself lucky you had a heater that was barely able to pull it's weight. Had it been more powerful, your tank would have made a nice stew for dinner, lol.

Staying on is unusual. I generally have a problem the other way with it not staying on.
I just replaced one a week ago and really like this one. It hangs off the rim of the tank. It's annoying when the suction cups won't hold it in place or it's always knocked crocked. I like these hang on types.

I had thought about that. Good thing I didn't set up the tank "Tim the Tool Guy" style!
Good thing you caught it in time! Some people don't pay attention to their tanks enough, glad to hear you do. I am personally hooked on the Stealth heaters. Rock solid, and the suction cups work quite well. Fully submersible.
Lady Hobbs, have you tried the Stealth heaters? Set and forget has been my experience. Suction cupped to the bottom of the tank under some gravel. Great heaters.

Well, everything has it's use it seems. I just use it to heat my bucket of water for a water change while I let it get stale.
