Are Arowana and flower horn, are this fish safe to eat?
Abbeys_Mom
04-16-2007, 01:09 PM
No. In fact they are deadly poisonous, like all aquarium fish. There is a rule of thumb, if it's in a tank, don't eat it (with the exception of goldfish, they are cold water).

Don't crucify the poor guy just yet. Probably young and curious and the question just came off wrong.
Many aquarium fish are actually used as food in their native countries. Iridescent Sharks and Pacu's are two that come to mind. Certain fish are deadly toxic, such as the Pufferfishes. I do not recommend keeping those if you have small children or animals. If one manages to get into someone or somethings mouth, you will have a tragedy.
Anyhow, if you actually plan on trying to eat some of these fish, I don't recommend it. Not only is it expensive, but aquarium species are not FDA approved. If you want fresh fish go buy a pole and a fishing license.

I know some people that actually catch fish keep them in a tank til they are big enough then eat them...not everyone will like it but it is part of the food chain...I don't like that people do this or even buy a bunny to get him fat then skin him and make a stew out of him but that is not our place to say it is right or wrong. IMO...To Each Thier Own!
Yea what Kenyth said..."If you want fresh fish go buy a pole and a fishing license."

but it kinda goes against logic going to a aquarium forum for eating fish.

You could eat some catfish, but please don't eat any fish that are supposed to be in an aquarium, you could get seriously sick.
AquaQueen

Yes and No. I think if someone wanted to know if it is safe to eat aquarium fish they'd have to ask someone who at least somewhat knows what they are talking about when it comes to Aquarium fish. Also I agree that it is kinda messed up to come to a site where everyone loves fish and are all here to help keep them alive and healthy, and ask what are the best kind to eat. So that is where I say To Each Their Own! Some may like it, some may not, who are we to judge...I am sure that everyone on this forum does something that someone else here HATES!!! We are all human and not perfect.

Just for the record, beer battered catfish nuggets with lemon and an icy coke = HEAVEN!
Most aquarium fish are NOT healthy for you. Some contain toxins that can get you sick. Plus, if you think about medications that you put into the water, it might not be safe to eat that.

It actually says not to eat fish that have been treated with any type of additives in the water, right on the back of your water conditioner, meds, etc., that you already use. That is where I read it before. Go read one of them and see for yourselves.

The meds say " not for use with fish intended for human consumption "

My point exactly! If anyone has ever treated their tanks, then they should have read the bottle to check dosage and seen that. Right?

It doesn't neccesarily mean it's bad for you. They probably just have not done any human testing, so they don't know and they don't want to get hit with lawsuits should some einstein decide to drink a bottle of Aquasafe.

That reminds me of an interesting tidbit of information. Completely off subject, but interesting. Eating cigarrette tobacco is an emergency method of getting rid of intestinal parasites. Nicotene is a decent insecticide and readily kills nematodes and snails/slugs even better.
On a more useful note, you can make cheap plant bug spray from water soaked with cigarrette buts and a bit of dish soap. I'm not sure about those Japanese Beetles though. I have yet to have a year where they don't strip most of the leaves from my Weeping Cherry tree despite my best efforts. They do a number on the roses too.

A military survival handbook and gardening articles. Who'd have thought the two would have related information? The things I read, huh?

i actually cant eat fish anymore since i got aquariums. never cared for the taste of fish in the first place. its sad here at superstore seeing the live fish for food for sale and seeing 10 oscar sized fish in a 33g with all these diseases
I can't stand eating fish, the taste is just as bad as the smell. I don't like mushrooms either. But even though I don't like it, I'll always try everything at least once. Calamari isn't too bad, just too chewy though. I haven't tried lobster yet, but I'm sure one day I'll give it a go.

fish is one of mine favorite food.lol
other day was cooking dinner and someone came, they said, oh i see you having fish for dinner. i said, so it smell like fish, well it supposed to be hamberger(beef).
A couple of years back, I when I lived in Germany, I was flying back home to Canada for holidays. My flight from Dusseldorf was late, so I missed my connecting flight from Amsterdam to Vancouver, so KLM paid for my hotel and gave me a dinner and breakfast voucher. Anyway, I was staying at the Hotel Ibis just beside Schipol airport and they had this wonderful breakfast buffet with scrambled eggs and everything. But it turns out, that it's very common in Holland to feed chickens grain and fish, so the eggs carried that flavour over ... blech!
