I am getting a 40 gallon breeder soon and I would like to add some firemouth, convict, and jewel cichlids. Right now I have 1 serpae tetra, 1 sailfin molly, 1 regular black molly, and a CAE. I have soft water, as well as RO/DI water. Can i keep cichlids and how many can I keep?

You could pick one of those three cichlids and keep a pair in a 40g breeder IMO. Whichever pair you choose will kill off your current tetras and whatnot. Maybe just get a small pleco or catfish to go with your pair. If you go with convicts, a breeding pair would mean they would have to be alone.

You may want to consider starting off with some dwarf cichlids. Kribensis, Bolivian Rams, healthy Germans Blue Rams, Keyholes, ect. Just do a couple of searches on "dwarf cichlids".

IMO I would pick to firemouths. Convicts once paired breed like rabbits. I kind of got lucky tho it is about 2.5 months since my last breed/only breed. Idk y but they won't breed. Ha they did once and now act as if they r divorced.

How about Rainbow Cichlids? I am raising four now (they grow fast!) and from all I have read, they are community tank friendly. I really like ours!!! They do not get very large, either, so you could have maybe 4-6 (?) of this kind. They're neat fish.
