View Full Version : Blue Catfish

I recently built a new 2 acre pond, average depth 15 to 30 feet. I've been stocking with shovelheads and blue catfish, in the past month I've lost 5 to 6 blue catfish but all the shovelheads seem to be doing fine. I've given them pellets and several hundred pounds of live bait. Just wondering if the shock of coming from the river to the pond is the reason I'm losing the blues.

There is a lot of information we need to know. Building a 2 acre pond with an average depth of 15 to 30 feet. Really? That qualifies as a lake! How long has it been established?

Built about 8 months ago. It's over 3/4 full, water is filtering from adjacent pond averaging 30 gallons a minute. P.s. Sorry I mean lake.

This sounds like an ideal pond for these catfish. Something must be not right for you to see deaths. Need a bit more info... you do any testing of the pond??

Welcome to the Fabulous AC!
Tests results will help you figure out the problem.

Test results wont be very similar to tank or small pond testing.Unless you have an extreme amount of fish in there the nitrogen cycle isnt really applicable. It could simply be the blues are being outcompeted by the shovels.O2 tests would be the most applicable or possibly you have contamination from high nitrates from farming ops in your area. Are both of your cat types restocked from other waters?

Thank you, no pics at this time, maybe later in the week. I will be testing the water soon.

There is about 2500 pounds of fish approximatley 125 fish. More shovels than blues. I believe they came from the Mississippi river.

There is 2 aerators in pond.
