I saw a customer buying the fish in the terrible picture below at an LFS today. I asked what it was an only could get Thai description.

Can anyone ID from this picture? Is about 2 inches long and has broad flat mouth.. Guy at store said it would grow to 3-4 inches and is peaceful. I have no idea.

thanks

It looks like a Pantax of some type. A Killie fish.

Thanks for the suggestion. After some research, I think you are correct.

I think is Golden Wonder killiefish. I may go back this week and get 1 or 2. Not very expensive here and a striking looking fish.

Do some reading on them, they are not all that peaceful.

Also, is it in a bowl?

Please tell me its not.

And as Rich said, Killies are amongst the least peaceful fish

It's a golden wonder killi. I keep one with cherry barbs and a crayfish. AWESOME fish with lots of personality - stays at the surface 90% of the time. Eats full grown guppies (tail first), but never touches the barbs. I agree it's on the mean side, but can work in certain community tanks.

Either get 1 or 6. If you get 2, even a m/f pair, they'll fight.

Killies are not meant for a community tank, they are mean and the fish in the bottom of the tanks stress them out. But the golden wonder killie is one of the only species I say can live (not thrive) in a community tank.

Many notho varieties (small ones) make excellent community fish.

Before seeing the last messages above, I went back to the LFS and got two males.

At first seemed like all was well, but this morning I am seeing a little aggression of one toward the other. The other fish in the tank seem to be no problem.

If it continues I will take one back.

A question - should I take back the aggressor and keep the more passive one or vice versa?

thanks

What other types of fish do you have in the tank? I would be more concerned about that than anything else.

1 Pearl gourami, six praecox rainbows. No sign of any interaction between them and the killiefish at all. Ignoring each other.

But betwen the two killies, one is definitely the chaser and the other the chasee. Not all the time, but on occasion. And the chasee hides among the plants a lot.

hmm IMO the Rainbows will not be to happy over time. These fish easily get frightened, stressed and die.

As for the pearl it may get of okay. Keep a eye on the killies, though I would get rid of one of them.

No probs. Just keep a eye on them. Oh make sure the Rainbows have plant cover to hide in.

As bad as this may sound, I would return the pick-ee rather than the picker. Since the weaker fish is more likely to be sick, or become sick. In the petstore it is best to pick the healthiest, largest and most active fish so I would keep the bully if any

Good luck

Before I saw this reply, I relocated the aggressor. Now everything is peaceful in the tank and everyone is getting along.

Does this qualify me to be nominated for the Nobel peace prize?
