View Full Version : What's Your Day Job?

For those of you who are open to sharing, I thought it would be fun to hear what you do during the day when you're not admiring and maintaining your fish tanks!!! It's fun to get to know more about each other!

For a living, I am a financial planner / money manager. I'm licensed in the areas of securities and insurance. I own a practice with my father, Don, who has been my business partner for 15 years now!!! I'm actually the president of our corporation and his "supervisor" in the eyes of FINRA. But, obviously, we are partners. When we first started working together, it was just he and I and we butted heads quite a bit. Now, though, it's a very good situation and I think we both benefit professionally from each other's insights. One of the things I'm most grateful for in life is the amount of time I get to spend with my dad.

Mostly what I do all day is work with people to be sure they don't last longer than their money does. Most of my clients are retired or nearly ready to retire and have done well with saving (affluent market).

My husband, Harvey / "H", is a surveyor / party chief and has been for about 25 years. He also does 95% of our horse chores these days. We raise and show miniature horses. H is the hardest working person I know. He still does yard work for a man he's worked for since way back when he was a kid!!! He is always doing something, while I am lazy when given the chance to be so.

What about you? What do you do as your "Day Job"?

I like the title "Domestic Engineer," because as everyone knows (or ought to!) stay-at-home moms do so much more than stay home and watch the kid(s) all day. ;)

So, I "stay home" with our sweet 18-month-old and keep the household running smoothly. We're also 12 weeks along with our second, due in June. We buy groceries, go to the library, go to the park, go walking with friends, run errands, go to Bible study, volunteer for church stuff, etc. It's a full-time job and then some, but it's what I've always wanted to do and I love it, and I'm so grateful that my husband is willing and able to support that financially.

Pre-motherhood, I was a graphic artist designing ads for a small paper in my hometown. Loved the work itself, but the ad reps, the clients and my boss were kind of morons and I don't miss it. Before that I'd done a lot of work in photography, most recently for the PR department at Baylor University as a student worker. I think that was the best job I've had, aside from what I do now. And before that, I've also been a reporter and a copy editor. My degree is in journalism with a minor in criminal justice.

I'm another professional student...(blush)

I'm primarily an entomologist. Have done research, worked extension, still do contract work for industry, teach...and am currently a p/t sessional at a university.

Hobbies account for a lot of my time too...pets of course (we've trained and shown dogs and horses, bred horses, etc), classical music (I play violin in our community orchestra), and art...I'm 15 credit hours short of a B.A. in Fine Art (was supposed to be a painting major, but somehow became a drawing major instead :hmm3grin2orange: )...but the way it's been left...doesn't look like I can complete it, short of moving away for a year...

...maybe when I retire I can finish up those classes...

I think technically my title would be "independant contractor" or something like that... I never bothered to ask really...

Basically I do landscaping, renovations, general manual labour, etc.

So basically "Carry this over there, dig a hole over there, put this inside that hole, dump this wheelbarrow over here".

Not the greatest job in the world, but a job's a job and it keeps me more active than any other job I could get.

I volunteer a lot. And take my son around to where he needs to go. This question is hard for me to answer because every day is so different.

Today as a sample:

Tonight I'm at a spouses club meeting where I am the photographer. Earlier today I cut up some stuff for our church. And I hang around online. And I've been doing some reading for a retreat I'm helping to plan this Spring. Plus our son had a social worker's appointment today

I'm the head tech at my Uncles garage that's been in buisness since 1912. I'm ASE certified (not quite master certified though) I do just about anything, diagnosing, oil changes, head gaskets, motor swaps, ect.

I specialize in computer diagnosing, both running problems and shutting off that pesky check engine light, but what I really enjoy doing is head gaskets, motor swaps, timing chains...anything that's gonna take several hours and keep me busy.

I'm 23 and have been only doing it for 6 years (6 years paid, lol I've worked on my own and family's cars since I was 15). I'm they guy that most of the old school people at the shop come to for advice on a check engine light or running problem.

Oh, and I just paid off all my tools. Now its time to buy more and get more in debt:hmm3grin2orange:

i work for the government. but it is work in the loosest sense you will find in the military. right now, as long we call in before 8 o'clock we are on time, i am home almost everyday before lunch, stand a 24 hour watch every 2 weeks, so far havent had to do the biggest pain in the butt part of our job this winter (filling 150lb propane bottles) and dont see my boses on an average day. course when we do have something to do there is normally some kinda drama cause someone else didnt plan well. but right now, love my job. how many of you can say that in this day and age?:hmm3grin2orange:
