I have decided to change my 45 gal tropical tank to saltwater. i have changed the gravel, added salt, changed the iternal filter sponges but just cleaned the cartridge filter. As i kept half of the mature water, will this speed up the process of cycleing the tank or is the bacteria different in saltwater.
Any thoughts would be great! :help:

Just add a media bag of shrimp skins/whole shrimp in the bag. It could cycle you in 10 days. Are you doing a FOWLR tank or are you doing corals?

i am going for a fowlr tank in this one because if all is well and i dont find them too hard to keep then it will be my quarrantine tank and i will make my 75 gal tank the mane one with corrals.

The bacteria is different so the tank will have to recycle.
Are you getting live rock? When you buy live rock, it will often have a die off period. Alot of people use this to cycle their tank. If you cycle the tank first then add the rock you may have another cycle.
What did you change your gravel too?
What salinity do you have your water at?
What is your pH and calcium levels?
You changed the internal filter sponges? Not sure what you mean by this?? Do you mean sponge filters? Power filter like a fluval?? Just so I can be clear on this, salt tanks need flow within the tank. Dead spots will often be the sites for algae growth, especially cyanobacteria. Powerheads are most often used in salt tanks as they can be directed to whatever area you want or need. I would have at least two on a 45g.
Are you going to get a skimmer?
What fish do you plan on keeping in this tank?

I have a internal sponge filter with a power head its 40 cm x 10 x 15 cm and simlular to a fluval. I changed these sponges to new as my lfs suggested. I also have a external canister filter with the flow and return at the other end of the tank so movement should be good.
my salt salidity is at 1.022 OR 31/100 and ph is 8.1
i havent got a calcium test kit.
i changed the gravel to coral gravel to help buffer the ph.
i havent planned on a skimer in this tank but if i enjoy keeping them then i will invest when i convert my 75 gal tank and this 45 gal will be a quarentine and sick fish tank.
I plan on getting some live rock tomorrow to start the cycling properly.
Hopefully in 2 weeks i can get some fish if i can afford it, WHEY HAY!!!! :19:

You dont need the expensive fish. You could get some firefish, some of the cheaper tangs, or some chromis.
