I have a 20-ish gallon stainless steel tank my father made years ago on the back porch waiting to be set up. It has a stainless lid too - but the lighting system is scary! Just a bulb hanging open over the water - no plexi or anything. It looks like a bulb socket you'd hang in the basement kind of buld too.

Can I find replacement lids or should I DIY a flourescent fixture in with a plexi "shield" of some sort?

Measurements are 14"high x 28"wide x 12.5"deep

For an unknown sized tank, i would reccomend going and getting some 1/4 inch clear plexi or regular glass, getting a glass hinge, and an adhesive handle, so you can cut it to fit your particular size. Also remember to leave room for you filters on the back.

If you want to keep it intact, as a 'vintage' aquarium...see if you can find an electrician who will rewire it for you and add a protective sheet of plexiglass...

Ah, much safer plan! Didn't think of that. I would like to keep it "as is" because it's handmade.

Sure wish he would still have the BIG tank he made - that was probably 75+ on a steel stand < sigh > oh well.
