So I have a 30gallon tank and I want to turn it into a planted community tank. I just bought 3 plants to start with from ebay
Riccia Fluitans
Dwarf Baby Tears
Fox Green (Myriophyllum Pinnatum)

I dont have a hood for the tank yet but I found this one on petsmart.com
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754551&lmdn=Fish

Im wondering if a 24"/20 Watt light would be good for that. Or what I need to do make these plants work. I dont have a hood so if I need a better light you have to take that into factor.
Also this will be in the dinning room which has about 4 windows if that makes any difference.

If you don't want a hood you could always just set up an over-hanging or over-extending lamp across the tank. That's what my tens have.

You dont want direct light as that will cause algae problems. That is not enough light for those plants. You will need 60 watts or so.

I live on a military base so I cant attach anything to the walls or roof

Is there any way I could just get a large glass piece of some sorts and then buy a light that sits on top of that

Do you have the original hood? you can get some light sockets and put them in the hood. Then use 6700k cfls. Doesn't cost a lot and still looks good.
