I know I have seen a thread that talked about some people using CLR to clean their tank, has anyone tired using simple green? It is supposed to be non-toxic and not harmful to us, I have a friend who uses it to clean his pipes and said it may be worth a try for my tank. I would assume it would be less dangerous to try simple green over CLR? It probably wouldn't matter since you would make sure it is completely clean anyway? I think I will try it in tomorrow when I am cleaning my 50 gal.

I thought about using CLR on my tank/lid when I have it apart to get rid of the mineral buildup on there, but after reading all the warnings/danger on the bottle decided against it. Then Simple Green came to mind (It is supposed to be envrionmentaly friendly), but again decided against it. I used a Dobie pad (bright green box in the cleaning supplies section of the grocery store "Scours without scratching" it says)and warm water, and a good deal of elbow grease, along with a scraper razor to clean the parts. Not perfectly clean, but better then before.
I would like to know if the above chemicals can be used for cleaning though..

I've used simple green for my 10g tank. Had some gross dried crud on there from when it was a frog tank. All you have to do it rinse it and scrub it out with hot water until it doesnt smell like simple green anymore. Then i just let it soak overnight in clean water and gave it a final rinse the next day and it was fine!

The company that makes "pythons" sells cleaners for tanks that are harmless to fish

I would personally be afraid to clean the interior of the tank with cleaners not designed for fish tanks. Some have success with some of the cleaners, however. Problem with some of the cleaning agents is they leave a soap residue and who knows what some could do to the sealer?
Someday I may head down that path but for now will just stick with good old hot water and a scrubber pad. Heck, I clean the lid on the filter and glass over the tank in lime-away with no problem and that's far from a safe product. I just put a couple drops on a paper towel, wipe the problem area then put the whole thing in my shower and let the water rinse it for about 3 minutes.

I wouldn't risk using it.
