The plastic impeller cover is the weak point of fluval canisters, the plastic "ears" break off too easily (and frequently IMO.) However, unless the filter is REALLY dirty you don't need to clean the impeller each time you clean the media. Otherwise, they're a decent mid-grade canister filter with a good flow rate.

Yup I use them and found them to be pretty decent. I got a used 58 gallon Hagen Tank with stand, Fluval 404 and Fluval 405, 2 heaters, driftwood, 2 big lava rocks and a bunch of food nets and gravel vacuum for $200 bucks CDN. Had not planned on getting a second aquarium but for that price who could pass up all of that?? The 404 needed some parts that were missing, the impellor cover replaced for the broken ear as mentioned above and also needed to have the motor housing gasket lubricated with the silicone lubricant they sell for that purpose. Super deal though.

thanks i will becarful about the impropeller . Yeah the place i got is a great fish store. Its small compared to your regular, The dude is an older guy whos been in the hobby for over 30 years gives awesome deals to help other hobbists, plus hes always making special orders for people. I wonder how he stays in buisness.

Also can i run this filter on low setting in my 33 to get some bacteria built up for the 60 gallon im building. I want to Speed up the cycling process. I have a few things i would like to do to my 60 gallon before setting it up, but how long would i have to have this filter run in my other tank before i put him in the 60? I was thinking of a week. Also if it helps the 33 has been running for about year and half with pretty much no major problems. I am just trying to plan it all out.
Thanks
Jason
